The plot where the Alcazar is located has been occupied since the 8th century B.C.[7] Remains of a 1st century Roman building have been found, whose function is not known with certainty.[8] This 1st century building extended from the patio de Banderas to the interior of the present site. On its ruins was built an early Christian church, identified by some as the basilica of San Vicente, which was one of the three main temples of the city during the Visigothic period. Some remains of this primitive temple have been found in the courtyard of Banderas.[8] Some capitals and shafts of this ancient temple were used in the construction of the palace of Pedro I. The tombstone of Bishop Honorato, which was probably located in this church, is now in the cathedral of Seville.[8] In 1366 the first civil war began.

In 1366 began the first Castilian civil war that pitted Pedro I against his half-brother Enrique II,[13] which ended with Pedro’s death in 1369, so it does not seem that he would have been able to live in it for long.[14] In 1366, the first Castilian civil war began, which pitted Pedro I against his half-brother Enrique II,[15] and ended with Pedro’s death in 1369.
